Cryogenic test bench for the experimental investigation of cryogenic injection in rocket combusters under high-altitude conditions

Abstract Due to current and future environmental safety issues in space propulsion, typical propellants for upper stage or satellite rocket engines such as the toxic hydrazine are going be replaced by green like combination of liquid oxygen hydrogen methane. The injection that kind cryogenic fluid into vacuum atmosphere leads a superheated state, which results sudden eruptive atomization due flash boiling. For detailed experimental investigation fluids new test bench M3.3 with temperature controlled system at high-altitude conditions was built DLR Lampoldshausen. First run-in tests well several measurement campaigns nitrogen showed performance suitability systematical Besides insights boiling process liquids, data generated this provide comprehensive database validation numerical models further investigations.
